On This Day in Pittsburgh History: June 26, 1906
Pittsburgh millionaire Harry Kendall Thaw is charged with the murder of architect Stanford White during a performance at Madison Square Garden in New York City, a building that White had designed 15 years previously. White was believed to have seduced Pittsburgh native and New York model and showgirl Evelyn Nesbit before her marriage to Thaw. [The Pittsburgh Press]
White’s murder and Thaw’s trial was covered extensively by newspapers across the country, calling it “the crime of the century,” and was the basis of the film “The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing.”
“Thaw had a pistol concealed under his coat. His face was deathly white. … Thaw placed the pistol almost against the head of the sitting man and fired three shots in quick succession.”
